The Market Based Finance (MBF) sector in Ireland is one of the largest internationally, both in absolute terms and relative to the size of the economy.

The sector supports credit and wider financial intermediation in the global economy for borrowers and savers, and provides a valuable alternative to bank financing. However, MBF can also contribute to a build-up of financial vulnerabilities, which need to be monitored.

In December 2024, the Central Bank of Ireland published its third Market Based Finance Monitor.

The aim of this publication is to track trends and the evolution of vulnerabilities in the sector in a systematic way.

This is a core element of the Central Bank of Ireland’s approach to safeguarding financial stability.
