Central Bank Governor meets Kilkenny students and businesses

Governor of the Central Bank of Ireland Gabriel Makhlouf met with students and business owners from across Kilkenny today during a number of online events.

Governor Makhlouf answered questions about the work of the Central Bank in supporting a stable and future-facing economy at a webinar with Kilkenny Chamber of Commerce, and owners of local businesses from Kilkenny, where they outlined the issues faced by their businesses.

Governor Makhlouf also met with members of the Kilkenny Business Women’s Network.
While meeting with Economics students at St. Kieran’s College and Coláiste Osraí, the Governor explained the work of the Central Bank and discussed the economy and a range of economic issues with them.

Lester Ryan, Economics Teacher at St. Kieran’s College commented “It’s great to have the Governor of The Central Bank visit our Economics students. Students have just studied price stability and the role of the Central Bank in the Economy so his insights helped enrich the students’ understanding of the course. We appreciated this exclusive opportunity to discuss current economic issues with him.”

Commenting after the meetings, Governor Makhlouf said: “I enjoyed meeting owners of so many businesses in Kilkenny today. Events like this give us an opportunity to meet people from all over Ireland and listen to the issues that are important to them and their communities and that are affecting them now. We are very much aware of how our work affects people’s day to day lives and want to make sure that business and people’s experiences and perspectives inform that work”.

“Hearing fresh viewpoints from the next generation is always valuable and I particularly enjoyed the opportunity today to meet some students from St. Kieran’s College and Coláiste Osraí and was impressed by their questions about the Bank’s work and the wider economy.

This is the first in a series of local events that the Governor will attend around Ireland this year.
