Central Bank launches commemorative coin to mark centenary of the Irish Defence Forces

The Central Bank of Ireland has launched a €15 silver proof commemorative coin to mark the centenary of the Irish Defence Forces.

Óglaigh na hÉireann was formally designated the Defence Forces 100 years ago in October 1924.

The coin design features the official emblem of the Defence Forces, common to all corps. It will go on sale today (Tuesday, 8 October 2024) at 10am on collectorcoins.ie and will retail at €65. There are 2,000 coins available.

Governor Gabriel Makhlouf presented the commemorative coin to the Defence Forces Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Seán Clancy during a special ceremony at the Central Bank. 

Governor Gabriel Makhlouf said: “The establishment of the Irish Defence Forces was a milestone in the formation of the state. A century later, it is fitting to mark this pivotal moment with the launch of a commemorative coin. I also recognise that personal courage in recent times has been a force for good and a catalyst for reform within the Defence Forces. This commemorative coin is an opportunity to recognise the men and women of our Defence Forces who have, for a hundred years, served Ireland, and the valuable contribution they continue to make to the cause of peace and justice across the globe. We are thinking, especially today, of the bravery of our personnel serving abroad during this challenging and dangerous time. They remain steadfast in their peacekeeping duties, far from their families and loved ones.”  

Defence Forces Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Seán Clancy said: “Since its the proclamation of its establishment by the Executive Council of Ireland on the 01st of October 1924, Óglaigh na hÉireann has sought to protect and serve our state in its formative years. Now a century on, we celebrate and reflect on the rich history and effect our organisation and its people have had on not only our small nation but worldwide with its overseas peacekeeping missions. This commemorative coin marks a significant milestone for our organisation and its history. As Chief of Staff, I am immensely proud of the commitment, dedication, and sacrifice shown by each and every member of the Defence Forces who embody the very best of what it means to serve. One hundred years on we carry on the legacy of those who came before, honouring their sacrifices while continuing to build a brighter future for Ireland and the world.  I know that the entire Defence Community in Ireland, serving and retired personnel, along with all of their families are concerned with the deteriorating  security situation that have resulted from last year’s attack on Israel. The safety of our contingent as they continue to fulfil their Security Council mandated tasks is our priority.”
