The Central Bank of Ireland
has launched the Jonathan Swift €15 Silver Proof limited edition commemorative
coin, on the 350th anniversary of the famous author’s birth on 30
November 1667. The silver coin commemorates the author with imagery from his
most famous work, Gulliver’s Travels, struck in .925 sterling silver. The coin
was launched at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin.
The Irish satirist and
essayist served as Dean of St. Patrick’s for over 30 years, where, on his death
in 1745 at the age of 78 he was also interred. Swift left his life’s fortune to
the founding of St. Patrick's Hospital, the first psychiatric hospital in
Ireland, which still serves the people of Ireland to this day.
An open competition was held
for coin designs, with the winning design by Polish artist Sebastian
Mikolajczak showing Gulliver standing on an opened book, Gulliver’s Travels.
The Jonathan
Swift coin will available to buy for €60 from December 7th. It has a limited
issue of 2,000 pieces. Coins can be bought from collectorcoins.ie.
