National Finalists for Generation €uro Students’ Award announced

• Teams from Summerhill College, Scoil Mhuire, Cork and the Institute of Education will represent their school at the National Final
• Finalists will present to a panel of senior experts in the Central Bank
• National winners will represent Ireland at an award event in the ECB in April

The Central Bank of Ireland has announced the finalists of the Generation €uro Students’ Award for 2017. The competition, run by the Central Bank in association with the European Central Bank, challenges Transition Year and 5th Year students across Ireland to learn about monetary policy.

Over 350 students from 82 teams entered this year’s competition, the highest number of entries since the competition began in 2011. 31 teams were invited to partake in the second round analysis and the standard of submissions received this year was outstanding.

Teams from Summerhill College (Sligo), Scoil Mhuire (Cork), and the Institute of Education (Dublin), have been invited to compete in the National Final of the competition which will be held in the Central Bank of Ireland on 3 March 2017.

During the final, the three teams will present their assessment of the economic outlook for the euro area, based on their independent research, to a panel of experts. The judging panel will then decide on the National Winners.

The winning team will travel to the European Central Bank in Frankfurt, Germany for a special event on the 4 April 2017, where they will meet ECB President Mario Draghi and other winning teams from across Europe. The winning team will also receive a glass trophy for the school.

• The Generation €uro Students’ Award is a euro area-wide initiative organised by the European Central Bank and participating national central banks across the euro area, including the Central Bank of Ireland.
• The competition calls on transition year and fifth year students to simulate the role of the European Central Bank’s Governing Council in determining the appropriate monetary policy decision for the euro area. Further information is available at www.generationeuro.ie

Round 2: Written analysis: 12 December 2016 - 31 January 2017

Round 3: National Final at the Central Bank of Ireland: 3 March 2017
